Denmark set to aim for 70 per cent reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by 2030
Following three weeks of intense political negotiations after the national Danish elections that took place on 5 June, the leader of the Social Democrats was able to form a government with the support of centre-left and left wing parties last night. Denmark’s next Prime Minister, Mette Frederiksen, announced that the left-wing parties had reached an agreement about a “new political direction for Denmark”.
Reflecting voters’ strong concerns about the climate and the environment, the first item in the 18-page document (in Danish), which sums up the new direction, is entitled “A green and sustainable future”. A central element is the establishment of a climate law with binding intermediate and long-term objectives, including a 70 per cent reduction of greenhouse gases by 2030 (compared to 1990 levels).
